‘We gave enough notice’ — Task Force Commander on Kasoa Market demolition

The Commander of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly Task Force, Nana Adesu, has rejected claims by traders that communication surrounding the demolition of parts of the Kasoa Old Market was unclear and inconsistent.

The early-morning exercise displaced over 800 traders who operated from temporary sheds, along with several others who conducted business within the affected enclave.

Some traders, speaking to Citi News, acknowledged receiving prior notice about plans to redevelop the market into a modern facility. However, they insist there was no clear indication that the demolition would be carried out on the morning it occurred.

Mr Adesu, however, maintained that adequate notice was given ahead of the exercise.

According to him, traders were initially directed to vacate the area by March 27, but the deadline was later extended to April 6. He added that further announcements were made on the morning of the exercise to prompt traders to move their belongings.

“Before we started this, we gave them up to March 27. We even extended it to yesterday. Yesterday morning, I went round to announce that we were coming, so they should pack their things, but they didn’t heed the warning. It was only when the bulldozer arrived that they began to move their items,” he said.

Nana Adesu further stated that traders were given approximately three hours on the day of the exercise to clear their goods before demolition works commenced.
