King Promise: I’m not making music for awards

Afropop star King Promise has opened up about his approach to music, stating clearly that awards are not his primary motivation.

Speaking in an interview on 3FM on Wednesday, April 15, the reigning Artiste of the Year addressed questions surrounding his nominations at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

When asked whether there were other categories he had hoped to be nominated in but missed out on, King Promise explained that he had not actively pushed for nominations.

“I hadn’t released anything so I wasn’t going for any nominations whatsoever,” he said, referencing his nominated collaborations, including “No Issues” with Lasmid.

The singer also addressed whether his relatively quiet period following his Artiste of the Year win was intentional. According to him, his focus has been on crafting a new project rather than chasing recognition.

“Obviously, we’re working on this project that we have out now… but I’ve been working on something crazy as well that’s coming,” he disclosed.

King Promise emphasised that his creative process is driven by authenticity rather than strategy.

“For me, music can be overly calculated. It has to come from somewhere that’s really special. I’m not making music for awards,” he stated. “I appreciate the awards, I cherish them, but whatever comes for you to see me as worthy has to be special.”

When pushed on whether he would be content if he never won Artiste of the Year again, the musician responded with confidence, suggesting he believes in the strength of his upcoming work.

“Oh, 10,000%,” he said, affirming both his self-belief and readiness for continued success.
