The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially sanctioned Hohoe United for breaching league regulations following the boycott of Match Week 28.
The club has been charged for failing to honour scheduled fixtures, an act the GFA says contravenes key provisions of its competition rules.
Hohoe United’s decision to boycott the ongoing league has become one of the most talked-about developments in Ghana’s domestic football in recent weeks. The club, which gained promotion into the league in the 2025/26 season, quickly established itself as a competitive side, earning respect for its discipline and steady performances.
Since joining the Ghana Premier League (GPL), Hohoe United has consistently hovered around the mid-to-upper section of the league table, at times pushing for promotion contention.
Their current campaign has also been relatively solid, with the team occupying the 13th position as of Match Week 10. Even after withdrawing from the league, they accumulated 30 points and a 4-point difference from the team in 9th position.
However, their abrupt withdrawal from league activities has raised serious concerns among football fans, prompting calls for clarity and intervention.
The boycott understandably stems from grievances in relation to officiating decisions and administrative issues, which the club believes have unfairly impacted their results and overall standing in the competition. The team, in a release, stated their worry about a 3-match ban on their home grounds, a decision they think is unfair to them.

In a new official release addressing the situation, Hohoe United outlined the reasons behind their decision, emphasizing what they describe as persistent injustices. According to the statement, the club cited a series of controversial refereeing calls in recent matches, which they argue have cost them valuable points.
The management insists that multiple complaints were lodged with the appropriate authorities, but little action was taken to address their concerns.
Hohoe United maintains that their boycott is not intended to undermine the competition but rather to draw attention to systemic issues that they believe affect not only their club but the integrity of the league as a whole.
The GFA, in their statement, has given Hohoe United until Tuesday, April 14, to respond to the charges as disciplinary proceedings commence. The association emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of the competition and warned that further sanctions could be imposed depending on the club’s response.
The development has sparked debate within the football community, with some sympathizing with the club’s stance while others worry about the precedent such actions could set.
With the season still underway, the situation presents a critical test for football administrators, as they seek to restore confidence and ensure the smooth continuation of the competition.
