Residents of Gushegu and its environs are grappling with the aftermath of a destructive windstorm that displaced nearly 2,000 people and damaged more than 250 homes across several communities.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Alhassan S. Tampuli, the storm struck on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, leaving a trail of destruction and forcing many families to seek shelter with friends and relatives.

He described the incident as a “sad day” for the constituency, noting that many residents were unable to sleep as strong winds tore through homes overnight.

The impact on education infrastructure has been particularly severe. Following initial reports from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and local assembly members, the MP conducted an assessment tour of affected areas after a courtesy call on the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Hafiz Adam.

During the visit, extensive damage was observed in several schools, including classroom blocks and teachers’ quarters in communities such as Limo, Zinindo, Digbila, Gaa, and parts of Gushegu township.

The administration block of Gushegu Senior High School was also significantly affected.

The MP warned that the destruction poses a serious threat to academic activities, especially as schools prepare to reopen. Many of the damaged structures, he noted, require urgent repairs to ensure a safe learning environment for students.

In response, the MP announced an immediate intervention to support recovery efforts. He has mobilised 500 bags of cement and 100 packets of roofing sheets to be delivered to the constituency to facilitate urgent repair works.

Despite this intervention, he emphasised that more support is needed to fully restore affected communities. He called on the government, non-governmental organisations, corporate bodies, and well-meaning individuals to assist in addressing the crisis.

“The education of our children is at risk,” he stressed, warning that the onset of the rainy season could further worsen conditions if swift action is not taken.
