Shatta Wale leads calls to free Abu Trica

Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, has called for the release of Frederick Kumi, known as Abu Trica, as he faces possible extradition to the United States.

Speaking at the Gomoa Street Carnival on April 5, 2026, Shatta Wale led the crowd in chants of “Free Abu! Free Abu! Free Abu!”

“Free Abu! Nobody does fraud here. Would they say someone is a fraudster if they had given us jobs? We all want money,” he told the audience.

Meanwhile, the Gbese District Court has approved a request to hand Kumi over to US authorities over his alleged involvement in an $8 million online romance scam. However, his legal team has 15 days to challenge the decision, putting the extradition on hold for now.

His lawyers, led by Oliver Barker-Vormawor, argue that the charges—wire fraud and money laundering—are not covered under the 1931 extradition treaty between Ghana and the US.

Despite several objections, the court has dismissed the defence’s claims, including arguments of political bias.

US investigators accuse Kumi of being part of a network that used fake online identities to scam victims, mainly elderly people, out of millions of dollars.

The case is still ongoing, with the next legal step expected to be a habeas corpus application to stop the extradition.
