Tamale City, Debibi United clash in crucial GPL promotion playoff

The Accra Sports Stadium is set to host a high-stakes playoff clash between Tamale City FC and Debibi United in the Access Bank Division One League Zone One decider on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

The crucial fixture will determine which side secures promotion to the Ghana Premier League, with both teams arriving in strong form after topping their respective zones.

Tamale City emerged champions of Zone One A, while Debibi United dominated Zone One B to book their place in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.

For Tamale City, a win of the playoff represents a return to the topflight after a brief and turbulent spell in the elite division. The club previously gained promotion to the Ghana Premier League during the 2022/23 season after winning a playoff against Ebusua Dwarfs and Liberty Professionals, filling the vacancy left by AshantiGold SC.

However, their stay in the league was short-lived, as they finished 16th with 42 points and were relegated after just one season.

That campaign was further marked by disappointment, including a playoff defeat to Nsoatreman FC, underlining the challenges the club faced in maintaining top-flight status.

Now, Tamale City returns to familiar territory, aiming to leverage experience and rebuild their Premier League credentials.

On the other side, Debibi United are chasing history. The club is on the brink of securing its first-ever promotion to the Ghana Premier League following a remarkable and dominant run in Zone One B. Their consistency and attacking prowess throughout the season have made them one of the most exciting teams in the Division One League.

The playoff sets up a classic battle between experience and ambition, Tamale City’s familiarity with the topflight against Debibi United’s hunger to make history.

As anticipation builds, all eyes will be on the capital for what could be a defining moment for either side in their quest for Premier League football.
