Minority criticises NDC spending as cocoa farmers struggle

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed concerns about what it sees as misplaced government spending.

The group claims that large sums of public money are being directed toward party structures while cocoa farmers continue to face difficult conditions.

These concerns were shared by the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, in a Facebook post during the Caucus’ ongoing nationwide tour of cocoa-growing communities.

According to him, their interactions with farmers have revealed widespread hardship, largely caused by falling producer prices and delays in payments.

“As we continue our engagements with cocoa farmers across the country, one thing remains clear, our farmers are in distress, and government must act with urgency.

“It is deeply troubling that while cocoa farmers are struggling with reduced prices and delayed payments, significant public funds are reportedly being spent monthly on party structures. This raises serious questions about priorities,” he said.

The Minority is now calling on the ruling NDC to refocus its spending on key sectors like cocoa, which plays a vital role in the country’s economy.

Annoh-Dompreh emphasised the urgency of the situation, urging immediate steps to improve conditions for farmers, including fair producer pricing and timely payments.

He insisted that supporting livelihoods should come before political spending.

“I strongly believe that the focus must shift immediately. The NDC Government must prioritise the cocoa sector by restoring fair producer prices and ensuring prompt payment to farmers. Redirecting resources to support livelihoods, rather than politically driven expenditures, is the only responsible path forward,” he added.

He also assured farmers that the Minority would continue to push for change.

“We will not relent. We will continue to stand with our farmers and fight for what is right until justice is restored,” he stressed.
