Drivers with fake, expired DV plates to be arrested from May 4 – DVLA

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that it will begin the arrest and prosecution of individuals using fake, forged or expired DV plates and DP stickers from May 4, 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 17, the Authority said the move forms part of efforts to strengthen regulatory compliance, protect the integrity of vehicle registration data and safeguard public safety.

According to the DVLA, the directive follows an earlier public notice issued on March 19, 2026, which outlined plans to clamp down on the use of expired 2025 DV plates, forged 2026 DV plates and expired DP stickers, with initial enforcement beginning on March 24, 2026.

The Authority noted that its Compliance Team, in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, has already undertaken targeted operations across various locations, focusing on the removal of non-compliant plates and stickers.

However, it said some vehicle users continue to flout the regulations, necessitating stricter enforcement measures.

The DVLA emphasised that under Regulation 23(II) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), it is unlawful to possess or use forged or fake trade licences, including DV and DP plates and stickers.

It warned that from May 4, 2026, any individual found in violation will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Authority further urged all vehicle users to comply fully with the regulations and support efforts to ensure a transparent, accountable and efficient vehicle administration system.
