The wife of businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye has formally lodged a complaint with the Ghana Police Service over alleged assault and prolonged physical abuse in the midst of their ongoing divorce proceedings.

In a letter dated April 14, 2026, Joana Quaye’s lawyers detailed claims of persistent domestic violence allegedly suffered at the hands of her husband over eleven years.

According to Joana’s lawyers, she was compelled to file a formal report with the police on December 9, 2025, following what they described as repeated incidents of physical abuse.

The allegations include claims that Mr. Quaye subjected his wife to acts such as slapping, punching, kicking, and whipping with a belt, particularly during disputes over alleged infidelity.

The lawyers further allege that the abuse extended beyond physical violence. They claim that on certain occasions, Mr. Quaye would attempt to coerce Joana into sexual acts upon returning from trips and that refusal often resulted in further assault and the withholding of financial support for the household.

Lawyers for Joana also raised concerns about what they describe as delays in police action. They referenced an earlier complaint involving an alleged incident at Dansoman in Accra, where Mr. Quaye reportedly attempted to forcibly break into his wife’s bedroom. In that case, they say, it has remained unresolved for three years.

The complaint has reportedly been referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, which has commenced investigations.

In the letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, the lawyers urged authorities to treat the matter with urgency, citing concerns about the “seeming apathy” in handling complaints of violence against their client.

They further called on the police to provide an update on the status of investigations and outline steps being taken to ensure justice is served, emphasising that the case raises broader concerns about public confidence in the handling of domestic violence cases in Ghana.
