The Honorary Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has clarified the operational scope of Engineers and Planners (E&P) within the mining sector, stressing that the company’s activities are limited to Ghana.
Speaking on Saturday, April 11, Mr. Simons noted that E&P operates exclusively within the country and has a relatively smaller footprint compared to major multinational mining firms.
“Engineers and Planners currently operate only in Ghana. So sometimes I don’t understand why some people claim they operate in other mines internationally,” Mr. Simons observed.
His remarks follow the Government of Ghana’s recent decision to award the Damang Mine lease to E&P. The mine had previously been operated by Gold Fields, whose lease was not renewed after its expiration.
Instead, authorities initiated a competitive bidding process to identify a new operator for the asset.
On April 7, 2026, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, explained that a specialized Tender Committee recommended E&P for the contract.
According to the Minister, the committee determined that E&P possesses the technical expertise required to sustain operations at the mine and extend its lifespan.
The reassignment of the Damang lease has since sparked public debate, given the mine’s significance as a major national asset.
Many Ghanaians have raised concerns about E&P’s experience, ownership structure, and the transparency of the selection process.
Mr. Simons, therefore, urged the government to prioritise technical competence and adhere to industry best practices.
He emphasised that decisions of this magnitude must safeguard the country’s long-term interests and ensure that the chosen operator can deliver effectively for the benefit of all citizens.
